5 Things Houston Can Look Forward To In 2017

Posted on 27 December 2016

With 2016 coming to a close (FINALLY) we look onward to what's next. As one of the most diverse cities in the entire country we pride ourselves on staying current and developing the under- developed parts of the city to attract more people. With that being said here are five things to look forward to in 2017!

5. Hamilton Comes To The Hobby Center

The Tony/Grammy winning musical "Hamilton" was literally one of the most talked about things of 2017. The production about our 1st Secretary of the Treasury will finally go on tour, presumably without its de facto leader Lin-Manuel Miranda. Nevertheless his 11 Tony Award winning play will definitely sell out here in Houston as soon as the dates our announced later next year. If you're somehow unfamiliar with the production it blends hip-hop, jazz, blues, rap, R&B, and Broadway into an unforgettable experience.

4. Renovations at Minute Maid Park

After 17 years we're finally getting rid of Tal's Hill. With that comes new seating options in center field and most importantly new food options! It's already been announced that texas favorite, Torchy's Tacos, will definitely be one of the new eateries in the newly freed up space. Joining them will be Shake Shack, who is most widely known for their burger menu. Personally I've never had Shake Shack but hopefully it's not like all of the other burger places from the east or west that comes here with the promise of a different burger experience.

3. The North Houston Bike Park

Houston is already home to the largest skatepark in North America, but now the North Houston Skatepark will add a huge new feature. The park will be adding a 20-acre park that will include a BMX-sanctioned race track, street course, freestyle ramps and bowls, and a community events center. The impressive, $14 million addition has already booked the 2020 UCI BMX World Championship. The 6-day event acts as a qualifier for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic games and is expected to draw upwards of 4,000 participants (both amateur and professional) from over 40 countries. The Greens Bayou bike trail will connect to the park providing recreational and mountain biking options. The park will be free to the general public.

2. A New Restaurants Row

If you've been downtown i know you can't wait until all of this construction is done. It will be over soon to usher in the Avenida Houston. Avenida Houston is a walkable, plaza along the George R. Brown Convention Center and Discovery Green that will introduce visitors to exciting culinary experiences, world-class hotels, art installations, and events at Minute Maid Park and Toyota Center. The district will be open in time for what is unquestionably number one on my list.

1. Super Bowl LI

They always said we wouldn't get another Super Bowl in Houston after our 2004 mishap. Much time has passed since then and our community has never looked stronger so it's only fitting for us to host this Super Bowl. Our constant renovations (some mentioned on this list and many of them not listed) and overall appeal to the rest of the country will definitely make the 1st weekend in February, one to remember. The Super Bowl has not only brought a 10 day event happening at Discovery Green & the surrounding area. It also attracted the UFC to host a stacked event at the Toyota Center the day before the Super Bowl. With everything the event brings the ACTUAL event may be one the entire lone star state watches. The Texans have clinched their playoff spot in the AFC while the Dallas Cowboys have long clinched their 1st round Bye in the NFC. This event will only become more interesting as time passes.
